Welcome!

A photo of Tim KamppinenTim Kamppinen I'm a wedding and portrait photographer based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I am available for hire in Kalamazoo, Lansing, Detroit... anywhere in the state, really (yes, even the Upper Peninsula!). Please have a look around; check out the galleries below for some of my favorite images, or browse the blog to see my most recent work. You can find out how to get beautiful images of yourself or your loved ones ones under the "Information" tab, and if you'd like to know more just click here to get in touch.

Some things you might like to know about me:

I'm originally from the Upper Peninsula (check out my fine art gallery for some UP photos)I moved to Grand Rapids for the beer.  Well, not really, but it was a nice bonus.

I have eclectic tastes in music... lots of folk rock (The Decemberists, Mumford & Sons) but also lots of metal (Iron Maiden, Metallica).

I play guitar, mainly 12 string acoustic.

I'm a cinephile, which is what film buffs call themselves when they want to sound fancy.  Movies and TV are a huge source of inspiration for me and sometimes I pay more attention to the lighting and composition of the scene than what is happening in the plot.  People have told me that this is weird, but people are wrong.

My favorite movie is Memento, and Breaking Bad is the greatest show in the history of television.  If you disagree, we can settle the matter with an old-timey boxing match.  You will, however, be at a grave disadvantage, on account of my magical moustache power.

With regards to photography... I like to create dramatic images.  I like to take photos that have visual impact, atmosphere, and mood.  I like to use lighting and composition to produce something totally different than what you would see with the naked eye.  But I also love to capture a person's genuine smile, or to make images of people having a great time, laughing and acting a little ridiculous.  I delight in capturing simple, emotional moments between loved ones that no one would ever call "epic" but that are truly meaningful to the people in the images, that tell a story and have the power to bring back all the feelings that they had at that instant in time.  The wonderful thing about being a wedding and portrait photographer is that I don't have to choose between all of these types of images.  I get to create them all and share them with brides, grooms, seniors, parents, and children.  It's actually really great.
